Chapter 15

Information flitted across Julian’s visor as it tried to identify the threats. These hive drones were something new, with a more upright posture and long, mantis-like forelimbs. Right now they were being slowed down as they tore through the drills on the Mithril patch, giving Luxathia and Kurli a chance to reach Julian - and a chance for the core to analyze them.

Swarm Instincts: Speed Increased by .5 for every adjacent drone.

Fractured Presence: In the presence of [Entity Unknown]. Tier increased to Bronze. +50 Resistance against magic. +30 Resistance against Physical.

“I can’t one shot those things like normal drones!” Luxathia shouted, almost drowned out by the storm. “They’re Bronze!”

Julian nodded. “I saw.”

“Can we fall back?” Kurli asked, looking at the approaching swarm.

Julian pursed his lips. “We have to try to hold this outpost. Otherwise it’s another day before we can expand again - and we can’t just let this fall. He’s only got those Scythe drones, no special resistances to arrows and they’re melee only. The drills on the Mithril are useless, we have a little bit to plan.”

“He?” Luxathia asked.

Julian glanced where the figure had been and saw no one there. “There’s someone with them, wearing a cloak. It says he’s Esoteric Tier. That mean anything to either of you.”

Kurli shook her head, but Luxathia gasped. “Some entities use tiers different than ours. Goes Arcane-Mystical-Occult-Esoteric-Cryptic-Cosmic. That thing is going to be incredibly dangerous. The kind of thing that ravages worlds. Esoteric entities...at least the equivalent of a Platinum God. At Least.”

“Oh, good. So it’s a Lovecraftian horror. Wonderful.” Julian shook his head to clear it. “It doesn’t seem to be attacking, but it’s giving those scythe drones a massive buff to strength just by being here. If that thing attacks, we fall back. Immediately.”

“Did it list a Rank?” Luxathia asked.

“Ephemeral,” Julian said.

“Ephemeral means it can only physically interact with the world in short bursts, then discorporates for extended periods.” The sound of wrenching metal drove home the urgency. Only a handful of the drills they could afford to lose were still intact. Soon the Hive would be laying into the ones Julian needed. “If it does attack, we’ll only need to survive half a minute. Then we’ll have days, possibly weeks, where it can’t act.”

“Right.” Julian put that information aside. “Okay. Here’s the plan. Luxathia, do you have any slowing spells?”

“Plenty. A couple which are AOE.”

“Great.” Julian glanced at the battlefield. “Luxathia, use those and Kurli, use your caltrops ability to slow even further. They have a Speed buff for every nearby active drone, so we’ll need every bit of slow we can get. We’re going to kite them to the turrets that have ammo - and we’ll pull them through the quartz drills, since those are less important. Looks like
